Conduct Research

The Edward L. Hutton Research Library houses thousands of family history books and folders. There are also records and indexes of the following: 

  • Courthouse records

  • Tax duplicates

  • Military records

  • Church records

  • Probate records

  • School records

  • Death records

  • Birth Index (records are available from the health department)

  • Marriage index (records are available at court house)

  • Cemetery listings

  • Lawrence County directories and phone books

There are also many helpful books for your geneaology research including:

  • Quaker genealogy

  • DAR Books

  • School Yearbooks

  • Donated scrapbooks

  • Many Lawrence County history books

The library also houses the following helpful materials:

  • Maps: Cemetery, Lawrence County, various other counties and states

  • Microfilm: Lawrence County miscellaneous, Schools

  • Photos: Limestone Industry, Lawrence County miscellaneous, Schools

Library visitors can make copies of most library materials.

  • 8.5 x 11 -- 20 cents

  • 8.5 x 14 -- 30 cents

  • 11 x 17 -- 50 cents

If You Are Unable to Visit The Library

For a fee of $20/hour, library staff will research your request. Contact librarian, Joyce Shepherd

The minimum fee for genealogy research is $20, plus the cost of copies and postage. Most deeds, wills, marriage and probate records are located at the Lawrence County Courthouse. Copies from Courhouse offices are $1 per page. You will have to contact the Courthouse for this information.
