A. B. Guthrie Jr.
Born in Bedford in 1901, Guthrie was one of the more successful novelists of the mid-20th century, and authored a series of books that were turned into major motion pictures.
Guthrie’s books were snatched up by Hollywood as soon as the galleys were ready.
“I want to try to interpret American life to the American people.” -A.B. Guthrie, 1949
At age 87, Guthrie wrote the environmental essays, "Big Sky, Fair Land."
Far less well known, but no less important was Guthrie’s tireless work to help preserve America’s dwindling wealth of wilderness and wildlife.
“Guthrie is a marrow-deep American writer, one of the best our country has produced.” -NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
